D.B. Cooper Days
Ever Wanted to Cheer for the Bad Guy?
On Nov. 24, 1971, a man identifying himself as D.B. Cooper hijacked a plane, demanded $200,000 and four parachutes and then bailed out somewhere above Southwest Washington. He was never found, though $5,800 of the money was discovered along the Columbia River by an 8-year-old boy in 1980. The Cooper case is the only unsolved airline hijacking case in U.S. history.
Each year, the community of Ariel, Washington, on State Route 503, celebrates D.B. Cooper Days with drawings and a look-alike contest.
The event is held in November at the Ariel Store, 288 Merwin Village Road, Ariel, WA 98603. Admission is free. For more information, call 360.225.7126.
